Jam n Bread enables diverse cultural communities to come together to jam, bake bread and share culture.

Featuring musicians and dancers from different cultural backgrounds, Jam n Bread follows a participatory model, breaking down the barrier between musician and audience by inviting participants to engage in both music-making and bread baking of the culture featured. Instruments are provided and all ages & all abilities are welcome.

Jam n Bread was a recipient of a Wollongong City Council Engine Room Grant and a small grant, which enabled us to host a one-day New Gen Culture & Music Festival at the Servo in March 2021.  Local New-Gen artists including Josh and Dom Hinton, Dear Violet, Mel and Marley, and Matilda and friends performed as openers for experienced musicians from culturally diverse backgrounds including Sako and Atef (Syria/Armenia); Somesing Laik Zat (Latvia); Ernie Beach and Nga Hau E Wha (Maori) and Chris, Laz and Vic Janko (Macedonia). The event was filmed by Elizabeth Tadic, produced by Sarah Hudson with Phoebe Shields assisting on camera.  The film made captures the incredible musicianship and intergenerational engagement of Jam n Bread.

As part of the Engine Room Grant, Wollongong City Council in collaboration with Jam n Bread has recruited nine New Gen artists (aged 16-30 years) to create a new music composition influenced by Wollongong’s multicultural diversity and inspired by culturally diverse musicians who reside in the Illawarra.

Balkan Cabaret

Thanks to Zlatko & his Balkan cabaret & everyone who came for our Balkan jam today. Our Balkan Pogvoca bread baked by young helpers was delicious too. Thanks to Our Community Project and Wollongong City Council Small Grants for making this possible
